Botanist and photographer join forces to put Teesdale’s wild flowers into focus

A RENOWNED botanist has joined forces with a local photographer to produce a pocketbook of upper Teesdale’s wild flowers.

The Wild Flowers Of The Tees Bank, produced by Dr Margaret Bradshaw and Geoff Herbert, is aimed at walkers and others who enjoy Teesdale’s outdoors.

Dr Bradshaw, from Eggleston, said the booklet was similar to two produced by Durham Wildlife Trust featuring magnesian limestone wildflowers.

She said: “There is one for the coast and one for the quarries, so I thought it was a good idea to have one for Teesdale.”

The 92-year-old added that the wildflowers are listed according to the months in which they flower, making it easier for people to find

the flower they are looking for.”

Many of the flowers appear in the summer months, with several pages dedicated to July, she said.

Mr Herbert, also from Eggleston, said more than 60 photographs appear in the booklet, which were taken over a period of about 10 years.

The 71-year-old, who sells his photographs at Middleton Craft, also arranged the layout and design on the pocketbook, with production help from Judith Mashiter.

1,000 copies have been printed and are available from Bowlees Visitor Centre with more outlets in the pipeline. Copies cost £2.
