BARNARD Castle came through a tough battle against Consett AFC reserves at the Belle Vue stadium to win their first game of the season. A second half goal from Jamie McDougall secured victory on a hot day away from home.

The first half was a scrappy affair with limited chances for both sides. Tom Merryweather made a last gasp goal line clearance to keep the scores level as they went into the break.

Ben Goodfellow and Ryan Todd both went off injured and the pair could possibly be out for a while. Goodfellow’s departure meant McDougall entered the fold and made an impact on the 60-minute mark. Jake McKellar put a dangerous cross into the box, Dan Lowther’s effort was blocked by the keeper and McDougall was able to pounce on the rebound.

It was backs to the wall for the last 15 minutes with Phil Merryweather and Rob West putting up a wall of defence to keep the Consett attack out.

Tom Merryweather was once again terrific at the back as he covered every blade of grass with his tremendous talent. Barney may have to fend off future interest from higher clubs for his signature.

Barney return to their home ground at Tens Field next week when they face a tough test against West Auckland Reserves, 2.30pm kick off.
