A nationally renowned comedian might be behind a Barney pub’s inclusion of the latest edition of the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide for the first time.
It was also a surprise for Three Horseshoes owner Robbie Green to open an envelope announcing the pub’s inclusion immediately after returning from a European holiday late last month.
The landlord said: “We were pleasantly surprised. I think somebody must have put us forward for it. We never really knew anything about it, but according to the letter someone from CAMRA has recommended us.
“We try hard to get the beers right and it is good to get recognised.”
The pub bar offers three beers on tap at any one time, with the brands being rotated regularly to offer a good variety of local and national beers.
Mr Green said: “We keep three on because we know we can sell that. They last three days at the most, you don’t really want them going any further than that for quality. If we put four on the quality might drop a bit.”
“It is an honour – we are thrilled to be in the guide.”
The landlord thinks a stand-up comedian might have had something to do with the pub’s nomination. He said: “It said on the thing that Ed Byrne forwarded it.
“He was in last October when he had a show at The Witham and he put on social media a “#pre-show pint” and included a picture of him sat at the bar having a pint with his team.”
