Barnard Castle Meet showcased community spirit at its best

This year’s Barnard Castle Meet was the most successful yet according to the organisers.

The dust has now settled on the hugely popular annual event, which was blessed by sensational weather from start to finish over the Whitsuntide bank holiday weekend.

Now the Meet committee is making plans for next year’s event, which will run from Saturday, May 29, to Monday, May 31, and the more volunteers that can help, the merrier.

“The support this year was fantastic, and the weather certainly helped make the 141st Barney Meet our most successful yet,” said Martyn Maughan, who is a long-standing member of the Meet committee.

“It was a wonderful weekend full of music, fun, and entertainment. But we simply couldn’t run the Meet without the support of local businesses, community groups, and the people of Barnard Castle.

“With support from The Clique, Barnard Castle Band, Affinity Choir, Teesdale SEND Stars, the dog agility team, and the Teesdale District Lions Club – whose free traditional attractions continue to delight children – the weekend truly showcased community spirit at its best.

“Alongside the committee, more than 80 volunteers gave their time across the weekend, helping with road closures, litter picking, set-up and take-down, stewarding, bar duties in the heat, and so much more,” added Martyn.

“We were also delighted to welcome new volunteers this year, whose energy and enthusiasm made a real difference.

“Planning is already beginning for Meet 2027. Volunteers and supporters are essential to the event’s success, and we hope they’ll join us again.

“As our town continues to grow, we would love to welcome even more volunteers across all areas of the Meet because it really does make a difference, so whether you’re a local or a regular visitor, please consider joining our team. We’ll always do our best to find a role and time that suits you.”

The success of the 2026 Meet means the committee can invest in future events.

One idea being explored is a set of reusable parade banners for local clubs and organisations, helping to enhance the parade while showcasing the many groups in the community.

The theme for this year’s event was Music & Dance and the committee is keen to hear from anyone with a suggested theme for 2027.
