A CHURCH’S children and parents group is celebrating 18 years together, over which time they have raised more than £8,000 for charities.
St Mary’s Under Fives (better known as Smuffies), in Barnard Castle, has not only given parents and their tykes an opportunity to get together each week in term time, but has also raised cash for children’s charities.
The group was formed by Kim Harding, wife of parish vicar Revd Alec Harding, along with the help of professional childminder Rachel Henley, with later aid from Lesley Taylor. Mrs Harding said: “We had about 12 turn up in the first week and it just grew and grew.”
Currently Smuffies attracts between 15 and 20 parents or carers each week, along with between 20 and 25 under fives. A unique feature is a collection of cakes provided by volunteers which are sold for just 20p during their weekly get-together at St Mary’s Parish Hall. Mrs Harding said about £500 is raised each year, with the group alternating the cash between local, national and international children’s charities. Weekly activities include a crafts table, dressing up, puzzles and a wide variety of toys.
As the group is funded by St Mary’s church, it costs only £1 for each family attending the weekly session. Each summer the group meets at The Vicarage for a teddy bears’ picnic during which each child in their final year at Smuffies is awarded a book prior to starting primary school.
They also hold an annual Christmas party where Santa Claus gives each child a book. Smuffies meets every Tuesday during term time between 1pm and 3pm.
The group held a special birthday gathering last week to celebrate the 18th anniversary. Former group members were invited along to the event during which a special Smuffies cake was enjoyed by all. For more information contact Mrs Harding on 01833 637018.
