Award for Babul’s commitment to community

Babul’s has been named SME Business of the Year at the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Awards 2025, recognising the group’s outstanding commitment to inclusivity, community engagement and social responsibility.

Held annually, the awards celebrate organisations and individuals who promote fairness, opportunity and respect in the workplace and wider society.

The recognition highlights Babul’s ongoing work to ensure equality and representation are embedded across every part of the business.

The award-winning restaurant group employs team members from a wide range of backgrounds, faiths, races and sexualities, reflecting the diversity of the communities it serves. Its culture focuses on teamwork, empathy and belonging, ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported.

Babul’s community engagement is equally far-reaching. The group supports numerous local initiatives, including Barnard Castle Golf Club.

This December, the team will also host a free Christmas Day meal for the homeless, lonely and vulnerable, continuing its tradition of supporting those most in need.

Shuhel Ahmed, managing director of Babul’s, said: “Winning this award means a great deal to us, especially at a time when the world can feel divided.

“As a father, I worry about the messages my children see and hear, with unrest and protests creating fear where there should be understanding.

“At Babul’s, we want to show that community, respect and friendship can bridge any divide. No matter your background, faith or identity, everyone deserves a place at the table.”

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Babul’s remains committed to bringing people together through food, culture and community spirit.
