Apprentice Luke finds his calling with family butcher’s in Barney

FOUND HIS CALLING: Training to be a butcher was "probably the best decision he made" admits Luke Morris TM pic

A BARNARD Castle man says he “found his calling” after completing his apprenticeship in butchery.

After leaving school, Luke Morris tried his hand at a lot of different jobs, but found nothing really appealed to him as a career.

Then two years ago he joined the team at family-run butcher McFarlane’s on Horsemarket, Barnard Castle, and things changed.

In September, the 25-year-old completed his level two apprenticeship in butchery with Gateshead-based training company Optimum Skills and says he “couldn’t be happier or prouder” .

He said: “It was probably the best decision I have ever made. I did a lot of different jobs after I left school but nothing really stuck.

“My family are in construction and my uncle is a stone mason and he tried to teach me, but to be honest it wasn’t for me.”

He added: “Being a butcher was something I had never done and I thought I would give it a go.

“Every day is something different and although I have been more in the hand-crafted side of butchery, we do everything from boning, sausage making to making pies and I love it.”

He said: “I’m a lot happier in myself and I really think I’ve found my calling. It was the best decision I made to join the trade.”
