Appeal to save village clock

Appeal to save village clock

WRONG TIME: The clock in Gainford was damaged by a powercut

AN appeal for cash is being made to save a village clock.
The Gainford village clock, the tower of St Mary’s Church, is in need of urgent repairs so it can continue keeping time and chiming.
Geoff Taylor, from the church, said: “Last autumn, the village had a widespread power cut. It affected the church clock and the back-up battery failed to kick in.
“The clock stopped – the auto wind mechanism for the chimes could not be re-activated.”
The engineer reported that the motor had developed faults in its circuit board and internal workings. Now the clock no longer chimes and is not keeping correct time.
The clock is maintained by Cumbria Clocks, which is refurbishing Big Ben, in Westminster.
“They have recommended that we have the clock fully repaired with new modern reliable motors for a cost of £4,000 plus VAT which comes with a ten year no-quibble guarantee,” said Mr Taylor. “The clock was installed by the Victorians in 1865, and we are very keen to ensure that it will continue to function for all future generations. For this we need your help.”
