App provides Barnard Castle history at the touch of a button

HISTORY BOYS: Brothers Geoff and Peter Dixon put up stickers that provide QR codes for a phone app

PROMOTIONAL stickers are being put up across Barnard Castle so tourists can access a free phone app that will take them back in time.

Using historic photos of the town and GPS technology, the history app brings up images and stories of Barnard Castle’s past as people walk by 50 locations. The app is the work of the Making Barney Brighter Team, which was set up to boost trade and tourism.

Stickers are being put up at the 50 locations with QR codes. Smartphone users can scan them in and start using the app.

Brother Peter and Geoff Dixon volunteered to work on the project.

Peter said: “I was involved with creating the blue plaque trail with historian Alan Wilkinson, who with people like Parkin Raine did so much for the town’s history. This app is bringing all that up to date. People love old photos.”

Regular visitor Gary Chapman praised the app when he came to the town last week.

He said: “We have probably got more history than most other countries in the world, particularly in Barnard Castle which is one of our favourite places.

“It’s a brilliant idea.”
