Annual Hutton Magna scarecrow fair raises £350

PULL THE UDDER ONE: A roaming friesian on the green

GIANT pandas, pink flamingos and cows with wellies were just some of the creatures on show in a dale village’s annual scarecrow competition.

The theme for Hutton Magna’s scarecrow competition, all creatures great and small, included some easy-to-recognise animals and some more mythical inventions.

In all, there were 19 entries in the competition and they were spread throughout the village. Visitors were asked to walk the trail and vote for their favourite. It was a tough job with some innovative owls, fishing toads, a flamingo, blind mice as well as a spider, a scarey-looking snake and the lesser spotter “wharisit” on display.

The winning scarecrow, the work of Isla Murray, was a mythical creature – Twinkletoes the Unicorn.

The event, which raises funds to help towards the maintenance of St Mary’s Church, in the village, has grown in popularity. This year the competition helped raised £342.

One of the organisers Marian Lewis, said: “It was, such a community effort and there was lots of support throughout the village.”
