All invited as home celebrates Scotland

TOWN TRADITION: Bowes Lyon House manager Julie Wilson with resident and former DLI Club member Malcolm Bonnett. They are pictured with the regiment's badge which has been put up in the former barracks

A BARNARD Castle sheltered housing complex is hosting a Scottish day and all are welcome.

Neeps and tatties stew is on the menu at Bowes Lyon House on Monday, November 18, as residents prepare to celebrate everything north of the English border. The Vintage Pipes and Drums band are also to perform on the event, which starts at noon.

The idea of hosting a Scottish Day came about when manager Julie Wilson saw resident and Vintage Pipes and Drums member Malcolm Bonnett returning to the home wearing a kilt. She said: “He came in one day after playing, so I said, ‘what do you do?’.”

The home is also celebrating after a refurbished plaque in the form of regiment badge of the DLI (Durham Light Infantry) was put up.

The building once served as a barracks for the 6th DLI Battalion and Mr Bonnett, who was a member of the former DLI Club in Barnard Castle thought it would be fitting to return the badge to the home.

He and a friend restored the badge and placed it on a red background, which he said was unique to the Barnard Castle regiment.
