20,000 bulbs will bring a blaze of spring colour to West Auckland

SPRING PLANTING: West Auckland's volunteer gardeners planted almost 20

VOLUNTEER gardeners have planted almost 20,000 spring bulbs in West Auckland.
The mammoth effort came scarcely two weeks after the village won gold in the Northumbria-in-Bloom competition for work done around the village green.
Now the West Auckland-in-Bloom group is extending the display to other areas of the village.
Jean Pattison, from the group, said 11,000 daffodil bulbs were donated by West Auckland Parish Council at a cost of £600, and a further 8,000 crocus bulbs were given by county councillor Rob Yorke. She added: “We have always planted out on the village green and we want to expand the display so we have decided to plant for everyone, not just the front.”
One of the areas to benefit is a green area surrounded by bungalows for elderly people at Monteith Close.
Residents of Rosalyn House care home can also look forward to a colourful display next spring as well as residents along Sycamore
Grove.
Work has also begun to clear out the planters on the village green, which, later this month, will be stocked with purple and yellow pansies and polyanthus to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee next year.
