MORE than 100 runners, walkers, horse riders and dog walkers turned out for a Walk the Walk event in Woodland on Saturday in support of Ukrainian refugees.
Organised by running enthusiast Tim Smith, the walk formed part of a broader community effort to collect food, medical supplies, toiletries and other items to support those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Mr Smith said: “In those couple of hours we raised £877. I am absolutely delighted.” A further £198 was raised by Butterknowle school.
People also donated items at a collection point, organised by resident Karen Horrocks, at the start of the event at the Edge Hotel.
Those who took part covered a 5km route along the Woodland Triangle, which was supported by members of Evenwood Road Runners and Hamsterley Walkers.
Earlier this year Mr Smith organised an inaugural To The Edge And Back event along the same route which raised cash for the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
He said: “We have gone from 55 to over 100 people. I ordered 80 medals, and I will have to order 27 more. The feedback from the Evenwood Road Runners and Hamsterley Walkers is that they will definitely be back en masse.
“Some of the walkers did not know we have such panoramic views up here.”
The medals were sponsored by Durtona Kitchens and NEDS Horse Transport.
The next run and walk along the same route is planned for Friday, June 3, as part of the village’s programme to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee.
