“‹Normandy veteran inspires children with special visit

HISTORY LESSON: Children from Ramshaw Primary School were fascinated by Tom Robson's recollection of the landings at Normandy during the Second World War

A VETERAN of the D-Day landings at Normandy was a special guest during an event in Evenwood to celebrate the “taste of British summer” .

The strawberry tea event was organised by and held at the Randolph Community Centre.

It was well attended by pupils from Ramshaw Primary School, military veterans and residents who enjoyed strawberry-themed treats.

The children were enthralled by the experiences of 95-year-old Tom Robson, who was part of the invasion that marked the start of the end

of the Second World

War.

Asked about how scared he was during the landings, the former Bren gun carrier driver said he was more curious because he had never been abroad before.

Mr Robson was only 19 at the time.

He added: “The first thing you did when you got there was to get rid of all the waterproofing.”

Asked if everyone got along with each other, the Mr Robson, from Escombe, said: “Yes, you had to because you had to fight as a team.”

Anther guest was former submariner John Wood who told about his experiences serving on a nuclear submarine. The event raised £115 through donations for the armed forces charity SSAFA with an additional £100

given by Evenwood and Barony Parish Council through its chairwoman’s fund.
