Outdoor adventurers go looking for signs of spring

George Backes gets a whiff of wild garlic

CHILDREN and their families braved the rain to enjoy a day of learning about spring and how birds build nests at the first Bowlees Visitor Centre’s Wild Wednesday event of the Easter holidays.

Organised by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership (AONB) and Natural England, Wild Wednesday activities are aimed at teaching children more about the area and nature. AONB officer Mandy Oliver led the children on a rainy trail to discover signs of spring, such as emerging daffodil bulbs, leaf shoots appearing on trees and birds building nests.

After collecting materials and building their own bird nests, the children went indoors where they enjoyed spring themed art and crafts.
