DEDICATED members of Barnard Castle’s volunteer workers’ group were out in force last week tidying up the town’s green areas.
The workers, who first began to help keep Barney looking spick and span about six years ago, are still co-ordinated by the town’s former deputy mayor Roger Peat. In their latest project, they split into two groups.
While one group took to trimming back laurel bushes planted adjacent to stone steps close to the castle entrance, the other party rooted out weeds from flower beds outside Niche Living, in Galgate.
Mr Peat said: “We had a great turn out. The laurel bushes were planted by Heart of Teesdale about four years ago and this work makes maintenance a lot easier.
“Before it was just weeds and took us about four hours a year to look after, now that’s only about one.”
Volunteers also uprooted ragwort when they came across it to ensure it doesn’t reseed. The workers continue to tackle all kinds of jobs around the town from sprucing up neglected passageways to laying road surfacing near the town centre.
