Volunteer efforts open up view of Tees weir

BEFORE AND AFTER: The 'lost' viewpoint is back in use after riverside growth was cut back

A SMALL overgrown footpath which afford excellent views of the Tees weir close to the silver bridge has been brought back into use thanks to the efforts of a member of Barnard Castle’s volunteer workers.
Colin Merriott had noticed that the railed part of the path was inaccessible due to the amount of riverside growth since it was installed as part of the £1million replacement weir in 2014.
Mr Merriott, a retired gardener and woodsman, contacted the town’s council office to ask if he could tidy up the area and was put in touch with the volunteer workforce, which form part of Barnard Castle Christmas Lights.
The group received permission from the Environment Agency to carry out the work and Mr Merriott completed the job during the festive season.
