Champion shows plenty of potential

THE annual classic show and sale of potential show cattle attracted and entry of 584.

Topping the sale at £5,800 was the overall champion, a ten-month-old Limousin cross heifer which was sired by Hightown Jako from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle, and was bought by A Ewing, Annan, on behalf of a customer.

The judge, Alistair Twell, Kettering, Northants, awarded the reserve championship to a nine-month-old Limousin cross steer from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Barbon, which went on to sell for £1,500 to the judge. The second highest price of £5,000 was achieved for the second placed eight-month-old Plumtree Fantastic sired Black Limousin heifer from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, which went on to sell to Messrs Dickinson, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

An eight-month-old pure Limousin heifer sold for £3,500 from Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm, Great Asby, to Messrs Nisbet, Sorn Mains, Mauchline, Ayrshire.

The show was sponsored by BB Dairy Ltd, WE Jameson & Son Ltd, The Farmers Guardian and H&H Insurance Brokers. Results:

Haltered Limousin heifer: 1, JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown – £5,800; 2, D&CE Marston, Easegill Head – £5,000; 3, D&V Hill, Whitewall Farm – £3,500.

Haltered British Blue bullock: 1, WA&GR Sedgley, Low Bank House – £1,400; 2, JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown – £1,350; 3, WA&GR Sedgley, Low Bank House – £1,320.

Haltered British Blue heifer: 1, WA&GR Sedgley, Low Bank House – £2,100; 2, D&CE Marston, Easegill Head – £1,500; 3, TA Lyon, Lintre House – £1,450.

Haltered any other breed heifer: 1, JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm – £1,350 (Beef Shorthorn); 2, JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm – £1,000 (Beef Shorthorn).

Haltered any other breed bullock: 1, JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm – £1,060 (Beef Shorthorn).

Unhaltered Limousin bullock: 1, TA Lyon, Lintre House – £1,230; 2, NE Slack, Plumtree House – £1,230; 3, I Townson, Cleatop Farm – £1,225.

Unhaltered Limosuin heifer: 1, NE Slack, Plumtree House – £1,140; 2, TW Hunter, Upper Brydekirk – £1,200; 3, S&T Fawcett, Fold House – £1,100.

Unhaltered British Blue heifer: 1, Bainbridge Bros, Marrick Abbey Farm – £1,065; 2, S&T Fawcett, Fold House – £1,300; 3, D&R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill – £1,115.

Unhaltered British Blue bullock: 1, D&CE Marston, Easegill Head – £1,250; 2, D&R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill – £1,125.
