MEMBERS of Middleton-in-Teesdale Garden Association celebrated their 80th annual chrysanthemum and vegetable show with a bumper crop of entries.
The show, held at the village’s sports and social club, not only attracted a good deal of exhibitors but there was a steady stream of visitors throughout the afternoon to take a look at all the entries.
Association president Liz Beadle paid tribute to long-standing committee member John Grey, who stepped down earlier in the year after serving 42 years.
She added: “It is a very special date for us as it our 80th show and it’s lovely to see some new exhibitors taking part. We welcome everybody that wants to get involved with the committee.”
Prior to the presentation of prizes and the annual raffle, local auctioneer Maurice Scott auctioned off selected veg, flowers and produce to raise money for charity.
Show secretary and stalwart exhibitor Anth Coatsworth, almost swept the board with his flowers and veg entries, winning eight trophies.
He won the Harry Ebdon trophy for three onions grown from seed, the Sinclair Cup for best vegetable exhibit, the Don Parker plate for best collection of vegetables, five blooms japs barred, three incurved chrysanthemums, five decorated reflexed chrysanthemums, three decorative incurved chrysanthemums and the Middleton Football Club best chrysanthemums along with the Silver Cup for most vegetable points.
He also shared a first place with another stalwart exhibitor, Ken Ebdon, in the heaviest marrow class, with both entries weighing in at 7.2kg.
Mary Elliott enjoyed a successful show, picking up three top awards for her floral arrangements and produce. Her showstopping cake, that paid tribute to the show’s longevity and took two weeks to make, won the rose bowl for best exhibit in the produce class.
Cotherstone’s Barry Watson ended his growing season on a high, picking up a trophy for his globe beetroot, the fifth win in five separate shows.
In the children’s classes, Skye Crawford picked up the trophy for the exhibitor with the most points and ten-year-old Oliver Hodgeson won the trophy for best exhibit.
