FOR the first time in its 90-plus year history, officials at Barnard Castle Angling Club have organised an open evening aimed at encouraging more people to cast a line into the River Tees.
The club, which has been running since the 1930s, currently has 70 members who enjoy angling on a number of beats on the Tees around Barnard Castle.
Club secretary Gareth Hinchcliffe said it is the first time the club has hosted an open event as a way of boosting membership.
He added: “There are lots of new people who have moved to the town and they may not know about Barney’s Angling Club so we wanted to give them an opportunity to come along and meet members of the club and see some of the fishing we offer.”
The two-hour opening evening event is being held on Friday, April 28, between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on the River Tees, just below the mill on the Demesnes, in Barnard Castle.
Qualified casting instructor Olly Shepherd, from Fly Fishing Yorkshire, will be giving a fly-fishing demonstration and everyone is welcome to attend.
Mr Hinchcliffe said: “The club is open to anglers of all abilities and allows a number of methods, not just fly fishing for trout, grayling and the occasional salmon.
“If you would like to attend just pop along on the evening.”
Membership to the club is £50 per year and day tickets for visiting anglers are also available..
