Widespread interest as changes to data protection law are outlined to Teesdale Business Networking Group

EXPERT ADVICE: Solicitor Helen Dexter explains the impact of a new data protection regulation that comes into force next month

WIDESPREAD concern about the impact of new data protection laws led to a large turnout at the latest Teesdale Business Networking Group meeting.

Some 35 people from businesses and organisations across the dale turned out for the event, held at Enterprise House, in Barnard Castle, on Wednesday, April 11.

Solicitor Helen Dexter, from Tilly, Bailey and Irvine, spoke about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The new law comes into force on May 25 and supersedes the UK Data Protection Act 1998.

Mrs Dexter filled in for expert Mike Smith who had to withdraw at the last minute because of illness.

She gave a brief overview of the law and explained that despite the potential for Britain to leave the European Union, the regulation would still be implemented.

Significant and wide-reaching in scope, the new law will expand the rights of individuals to control how their personal information is collected and processed, and places a range of new obligations on organisations to be more accountable for data protection. It is something that all businesses, whether sole traders or the larger organisation, must comply with.
