Duo promise smoother, healthier iced treats… what’s not to like?

TASTY TREAT: Sue Oates

THE operators of a new business selling speciality Italian frozen treats couldn’t have picked a better weekend to open their doors for the first time.
Sunshine and soaring temperatures greeted the launch of Gelato Lusso, in Market Place, Barnard Castle.
The venture is the brainchild of Sue Oates and Geoff Rider, who decided the time was right to try something new. Mr Rider discovered his love for gelato during regular business trips to Italy, while pilates teacher Ms Oates was looking for a new challenge after her classes went online during the pandemic.
Mr Rider said gelato was an excellent alternative to traditional ice-cream.
“Unlike dairy ice-cream, it has less fat content. It is churned a lot slower, so you don’t get as much air.
“It is smoother, denser and healthier with a creamier flavour hit.”
He said the business was using a 150-year-old recipe hand-made for Gelato Lusso.
Ms Oates added: “We had been looking around for suitable premises for a little while. It felt like the right thing to do in a great location in town. There is a very social atmosphere here.”
In addition to gelato, the couple plan to sell artisan coffee and incorporate a patisserie offering cakes both in the shop and made to order.
