Advertising feature: Outdoor dining on the menu at the Bengal Merchant

GREAT OUTDOORS: Mufti Choudhury is looking forward to welcoming customers to The Bengal Merchant's refurbished outdoor dining area this month

A BARNARD Castle curry house has revamped its rarely used outdoor space in anticipation of welcoming eager customers when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted later this month.
Gastronomes will be able to enjoy a balti or chicken tikka marsala in the shadows of the walls of Barnard Castle when The Bengal Merchant reopens for business on April 12 following a significant renovation.
Run by brothers Mo, Mufti, Naz and Chad Choudhury, the restaurant, on The Bank, has continued to provide takeaways throughout the pandemic, but has been unable to provide sit-down meals since November last year.
In anticipation of Government restrictions being lifted and people again being allowed to be served outdoors, the owners have invested in a revamp of their facilities.
Mufti Choudhury said new decking had been installed in the rear garden along with new lighting and tables, and refurbished benches.
He said: “We have used [the garden] on occasion, but it was very rarely. We thought let’s open it up and see how it goes. I think once this is done up and we have done everything properly we will keep it open. It is a nice place to come out with a drink and relax.
“We can’t wait to open up and let everyone back in.”
The outdoor area can seat about 20 people in groups of four.
Mr Choudhury said: “We have the potential to do more if families of six want a meal out.”
Ordinarily the restaurant could accommodate up to 60 diners indoors, but when restrictions are further lifted in May to allow people inside, the brothers expect that to be limited to about 30 customers at any one time.
Currently the restaurant is open Wednesday through to Sunday, and is closed Monday and Tuesday. The restaurant will, however, be open on bank holiday Mondays and the owners hope to operate six days a week by the summer.
In anticipation of the reopening the brothers are running an online competition via Facebook with five £20 vouchers up for grabs.
People who want to participate should like, share and tag a friend on The Bengal Merchant’s Facebook page.
