We need to talk about landscapes’

ON SHOW: Jill Campbell with one of her works at the exhibition in The Witham

AN exhibition focusing on how different artists see and respond to the northern landscape opened this week at The Witham, Barnard Castle.

“We need to talk about landscape” show runs until Saturday, February 24. Artists include Jill Campbell, Richard Grey, Jo York, Susan Dugdale and Keith Alexander.

Ms Campbell said: “Keith Alexander had the idea of setting up the exhibition at The Witham to show how different landscape artists take a different points of view on how they paint landscapes.”

Ms Campbell, a full-time professional artist, has had shows in the Watermark gallery in Harrogate, Gallagher and Turner in Newcastle, as well as featuring at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London.

“I would describe my work as atmospheric semi abstract. The fells around here are very atmospheric and have been formed by nature over thousands of years.

“Because the area can be so bare it lends itself to abstraction because you are seeing the shapes made by the light and the landscape itself.

“I used to live in the middle of Cardiff, and it was such a breath of fresh air moving to this area and being able to appreciate the views every day.”

“I think that is what inspired me to pick up a paintbrush again, which I hadn’t done since I was young.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the other artists’ work in the show. I think they will all be addressing their particular local landscapes in their own way.”
