Turrets plan repeat performance of Spacewang to raise money for Barnard Castle arts venue

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: Mia Jahan and Izzy Yeadon

THE Turrets youth theatre group is returning to the stage in Barnard Castle for one night only early next month to help raise funds for The Witham.

Back by popular demand is a performance of the comedy drama Spacewang, which the group performed in July last year.

The work of Hull playwright Tom Wells, it follows the story of Nora, who is convinced her mum has been kidnapped by aliens, whereas the reality is something much more tragic.

The play, on Thursday, March 7, will be performed by the same members of The Turrets who took to the stage last year – Izzy Yeadon, Lois Falshaw, Mia Jahan and Amy Hughes.

Izzy, 14, said: “It’s a comedy drama. It’s got some very funny parts to the story but there is some serious stuff in there as well.”

Director Rupert Philbrick said the show had been well received last summer – despite some serious competition on the night it was performed.

“We were up against the World Cup and the Castle Players, but we had a really successful first performance.

“Word spread that we had this show and that is quite special.”

He added: “When The Witham was in financial strife, the girls came up with the idea of a repeat performance to raise funds and we have been able to schedule it in as part of this season.”

Mr Philbrick said the play had been written as a monologue and the Turrets had come up with the idea of giving the other characters mentioned in the plot a physical presence on stage.

Having performed the play last year, Izzy said the cast were well on their way to getting up to speed.

Showtime is 7.30pm and tickets are available for £7.50, £5 (U16s) and £20 for families.

The show is suitable for audiences aged 12-plus.
