Town inn showcases work by students of Whorlton artist

UPLIFTING: Artist Jane Young with landlord Roy Chatterjee

THERE will be more than 20 reasons to be cheerful for visitors to the Old Well Inn, in Barnard Castle, later this month as members of an art class stage a month-long exhibition at the hostelry.

The exhibition – Reasons to be Cheerful – features work by members of artist Jane Young’s classes.

Ms Young, who runs art and craft classes in her home village of Whorlton and at Staindrop, said: “Art is a great therapy for health and well-being and I suggested to my art class members that they create a new piece of work based on something they feel gives them a positive feeling – something that makes them feel cheerful and uplifted.”

It is not the first time local artists have displayed their work in the Old Well. Last year, Greta Bridge artist Catherine Beaumont was given permanent wall space at the hotel and more recently pastel artist Michael Horner has been showing his work.

The exhibition will be on display in the breakfast room and went on display from Monday, May 20. It continues until Sunday, June 30.

Landlady Rima Chatterjee, said: “We are always looking for new ways to promote local artists as I feel sometimes they struggle to find places to display their work. By having the exhibition here at the hotel not only will our guests who are staying with us get to see their work, but also anyone who is a regular as well.”
