A chance discovery in an attic sparks a fascinating family story in a solo show that comes to Barningham Village Hall on Saturday, November 18.
Welsh storyteller Phil Okwedy will share an incredible personal story exploring equality, freedom, racism, family and growing up without your birth parents in a touching, funny and evocative performance.
Sparked by the discovery of a series of letters from his father in Nigeria to his mother in Wales, The Gods Are All Here skilfully weaves myth, song, folktales and legends of the African diaspora with an astonishing personal story that uncovers Phil’s experiences of growing up as a child of dual heritage in Wales in the 1960s and 70s.
Phil said: “The letters cover the period of my life when they say young children see their parents as gods.
“But I never lived with either of mine and so, having missed out on that experience, the show explores the letters to see whether I, and the audience, can find in them that my parents were in fact gods.
“In sharing the show my intention is that it resonates with other people, because it is by working together that equality, justice and freedom are experienced by all”
The show comes to Barningham through the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme which works with local volunteer promoters to bring professional theatre, music and dance to village halls and community venues across County Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria.
Robin Brooks, a member of Barningham Village Hall committee, said: “Phil’s show has played to full houses and has been praised as captivating, lyrical and warm.
“This is his only date in Teesdale under the Highlights banner so it is a must-see. Exploring themes of equality, freedom, racism and family it is both timeless and very much a story for now.
“The small size of our hall makes it ideal for one-person productions like this and there’s always a warm atmosphere and a great “buzz” between performers and audience.
“And it’s a chance to enjoy professional theatre right on your doorstep for the price of a couple of drinks.”
The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £12. To reserve tickets telephone 01833 621203 or email rpbrooks72@ gmail.com; or book online at www.highlightsnorth.co.uk (booking fee applies).
Those attending are welcome to bring their own drinks.
The show is suitable for ages 12+; it includes stories of slavery, descriptions of violence and discriminatory language.
