Barnard Castle’s comedy scene is about to get a serious boost, as Teesdale-based promoters Funny Way To Be Comedy announce a stellar spring line-up at The Witham.
Featuring a host of top-tier talent, including major names from TV and radio, these 15 stand-up comedy shows will run from January to June, promising a side-splitting journey for comedy fans of all ages.
Peter Dixon, spokesperson for Funny Way To Be Comedy, couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming season. He said: “We’ve put together a cracking programme with something for everyone – household names to rising stars, every show is a must-see!”
The season kicks off with two back-to-back performances that comedy lovers won’t want to miss. On Saturday, January 25, Carl Hutchinson brings his hit show Today Years Old to town. It is a chance to catch one of the last performances of his UK tour.
On Thursday, January 30, Funny Way To Be welcomes back Canadian comedy legend Tom Stade. Known for his irreverent and unpredictable style, Tom’s Risky Business will take you on a hilarious rollercoaster ride of witty social commentary.
February packs a punch with a whopping seven shows, starting with Mark Thomas on Saturday February 1. Mark’s Gaffa Tapes blends politics, comedy, and music in a whirlwind show.
On Wednesday, February 7, the up-and-coming Connor Burns takes to the stage with 1994. With his Scottish cynicism and razor-sharp wit, Connor’s third solo tour is sure to impress.
The following day, Zoe Lyons brings her acclaimed new show Werewolf. Zoe’s comedy is equal parts hilarious and relatable – essential for fans of sharp, observational humor.
One of the most highly anticipated performances of the season comes on February 12 and 13, when Mark Steel returns to Barnard Castle for two special shows. After winning hearts with Mark Steel’s In Town, he brings his personal battle with throat cancer into his comedy, crafting a show that’s as inspiring as it is funny.
Peter Dixon says: “We saw a preview of this show, and it’s one of the very best we’ve seen in the last five years. We had no hesitation in bringing him back for two consecutive evenings.”
On Saturday, February 22, Justin Moorhouse explores life’s ups and downs in The Greatest Performance of My Life, blending laugh-out-loud moments with touching reflections.
Then, on Wednesday, February 26, Ignacio Lopez – Spain’s finest export – makes his debut at The Witham with Señor Self-Destruct. From his hilarious take on self-improvement to his biting commentary on life, Ignacio’s debut is not to be missed.
March brings more comedy gold with Russell Hicks on Friday 14. Known for his high-energy improvisation, Russell’s show is a unique experience. Chris Cantrill, nominated for best show at the Edinburgh Fringe, takes to the stage on March 2 with Easily Swayed, exploring middle age, high fantasy and why it’s okay to wear a cape.
The laughter continues with Geoff Norcott on April 5, and Stuart Mitchell on May 2. On May 8, Kai Humphries brings his unique brand of observational humor and high-energy performance to the stage.
To wrap up the season, Simon Evans closes the series on June 5 with Have We Met?, a hilarious and poignant look at comedy, life, and narrowly avoided career disasters.
