Show will hog the limelight

BACK TO NATURE: Performers Hannah Goudie-Hunter and Jonny Curry in rehearsals for Hedge TMpic

A DANCE company took up residence in Barnard Castle’s arts centre to put the finishing touches to a new show aimed at children and families.

The D Project will return to The Witham on Wednesday, June 22, to perform Hedge.

Debbie Harbin, artistic director and choreographer, explained: “It’s basically seeing the world through a hedgehog’s eyes and what the hedgehog meets when coming out of hibernation.

“It’s about animals, the seasons and very much about the effect of humans on the world.

“We see all the beautiful things in nature that we can affect as humans. The performance is about being brave, facing different challenges and adapting to them.”

Ms Harbin said all the puppets and much of the set for Hedge is made using recycled materials.

The show is aimed at children aged four and older and their families and at the end of the performance, there is a “stay and play” session.

Ms Harbin described Hedge as a “collaborative piece” which will feature two performers, a puppeteer and a dancer.

Hedge will visit The Witham as part of an eight-day tour of the region.

“This is my first tour of more than a couple of venues,” added Ms Harbin. “The piece is for everybody. We say ‘ages four-plus’, but everyone can enjoy it and take something from it.”

The D Project has spent more than a decade bringing dance to a wider audience.

“We work in education and with community groups. It’s about making dance accessible for everyone,” said Ms Harbin.

At The Witham, the D Project has been organising a weekly class called Best Foot Forward which offers movement and dance for people 65-plus. As well as offering dance skills, the sessions improve strength flexibility and balance.

Meanwhile, next up for the D Project is a piece on “Sleep” , which is currently being developed.

“It is for a slightly older audience,” said Ms Harbin.

Tickets for Hedge are on sale priced £6 for adults and £5 for children. The show will be performed at 5pm.
