Shakespeare… in the company of visiting fools

FRESH AND FEISTY: Members of the Three Inch Fools theatre group

THE Three Inch Fools – a national touring company acclaimed for their fast-paced and musically driven approach to Shakespeare – are coming to Whorlton on Tuesday, July 31.

Five actors, with all manner of musical instruments and plenty of character-swapping, will present an inventive take on the Bard’s Hamlet as part of their national summer tour.

The group will set Shakespeare’s iconic masterpiece of loss and the supernatural, poetry and revenge to a sound scape of Scandinavian folk and musical drama.

James Hyde, director and co-founder of Three Inch Fools, said: “We want to show Shakespeare off to everyone and excite a whole new generation of Shakespeare lovers to get to know his plays in all their vibrancy.

“Through our own high-paced performance style and musical talents we would say we have found our own unique take on Shakespeare.”

Last year, the group brought their version of Romeo and Juliet to Whorlton village green to much acclaim.

This year, the venue is the garden of Whorlton Croft.

Mary Stastny, of Whorlton Community Association, which is organising the event, said the switch in venue had been made in order to avoid disruption caused by cars during the change in shifts at the residential home in the village.

“One car memorably did a ten-point turn just behind the stage,” she recalled.

“Whorlton Croft has one of the most admired gardens in the village and the community association is most grateful to Mr and Mrs Bigge for lending us the use of their garden for the event.”

Mrs Stastny said she would not hesitate to recommend Three Inch Fools’ shows to anyone who likes their Shakespeare “fresh and feisty” .

She said: “The Fools’ incredible energy and enthusiasm male both the tragedies and comedies absolutely gripping.”

Tickets for the show are £10 for adults and £5 for children. The show starts at 7pm, with the gates open an hour earlier for picnics.
