Shakesbeer… Can you name Castle Players’ new ale?

NAME THE BEER: The Castle Players' Adele Tyler

HUBBLE, bubble – Macbeth’s brew needs you.

For the last few years the Castle Players’ outdoor summer production, in the grounds of The Bowes Museum, has been celebrated by local micro-brewery, Mithril Ales, with the brewing up of a special real ale. It is enjoyed in pubs around Teesdale.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Castle Players’ spectacular outdoor productions and will be one of Shakespeare’s most iconic and well-known plays, Macbeth. The theatre group is looking for someone to come up with a name for the brew.

The winner will win a “fantastic” three-part prize.

They and a friend will be able to visit the micro-brewery at Mithril Ales, Aldbrough St John, to help start off the special brew. They will also be invited to The Old Well Inn, Barnard Castle, for the beer’s launch and able to taste the first two pints out of the pump. Thirdly, they will receive two tickets to enjoy the performance of Macbeth on the evening of Tuesday, July 10.

People can enter by sending their suggested name for the beer to the The Castle Players in a message via their Facebook page or by email to info@castleplayers.co.uk with the subject “Name the Ale” . Entries must be received by midnight on Sunday, June 10.

Pete Fenwick, of Mithril Ales, said: “I like to support the arts locally and I first brewed a special beer for The Castle Players in 2012 which was called The Castle Players Ale, Beer As You Like It.

“The Castle Players bring Shakespeare alive and the idyllic setting could not be better. I can’t wait to see them tackle the tragedy of Macbeth.” Macbeth plays from Tuesday, July 10, to Saturday, July 14, in the grounds of The Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle. Tickets can be bought online at www.thewitham.org.uk, by phone 01833 631107, or in person at The Witham, Barnard Castle.

The Castle Players was established in 1986 in the bar of the Old Well pub, in Barnard Castle, when a group of customers decided to play charades to pass the time.
