Review of Pinocchio – The Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond

Pinocchio

PINOCCHIO is a first for me as a panto, so I wasn’t sure what to expect or if it would work with the traditional panto themes. But of course, I needn’t have worried as writer and director the incredible Clare Allen was at the helm guiding The Georgian Theatre Royal into another amazing panto season.

Nick O’Connor has returned again as the Dame, this time as Mrs Gepetto as the carpenter creating the toy / boy Pinocchio. He has a genuine rapport with the audience, with plenty of bad jokes, great presence on stage with hideous taste of dress sense in some amazing costumes. Pinocchio, Marcus Jones, will be loved by all the children, he’s a loveable and delightful character. The evil circus owner Stromboli Jones, Ben Andrew, brilliantly takes all the boos and hisses he can, a perfect baddie loved by everyone. Sarah Boulter played two parts as the Blue Fairy and Laurence Fox. I’ve got to admit my favourite was Mickity Crickety, Liam McGrath, what an insect, I almost wish I could move like that.

The young members of the cast, of which they have three groups, are full of energy and enthusiasm, complementing the cast perfectly. Suddenly, they also appear amongst the audience with water pistols to pass to you to join in and handing out knitted fish to throw on stage to save the day. Of course, you expect something knitted to throw in Richmond! Don’t forget try and catch a Tunnock’s Teacake.

The theatre is the most intimate setting especially for a panto, its almost feels as if they’re performing just for a small group of friends. I’ll certainly be back to see the show again later in the run.

Pinocchio runs until 8th January 2023.
