No book talks, but author Kay ensures pupils won’t miss out

SPECIAL SET: Author Kay Wilson has put together new pocket books for pupils to mark World Book Day

A BARNARD Castle author has brought out a new set of pocket books for the town’s school children to celebrate World Book Day on March 4.
For the past eight years, Kay Wilson has given talks and readings at Green Lane Primary School, in Barnard Castle, as part of the celebrations. However, this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic that isn’t going to be possible.
So Ms Wilson has brought out a new series of books she has called Higgledy Piggley.
The six miniature and pocket-sized books, contained in a wallet or pocket, include a range of stories and poems, written and illustrated by Ms Wilson.
She said: “I normally get invited to speak to the children about writing and give talks, but that won’t be possible, so I have produced this new series of pocket books with miniatures so each of the children will be able to take one home.
“I produce all of the books at home and it is keeping me going through lockdown and it is something I love doing.
“It is great to get the feedback from the children and that’s enough for me.”
And although Ms Wilson won’t be able to visit Green Lane Primary School this year, her new pocket books will feature in home-learning activities on World Book Day.
Stories and poems included in the new pack feature I’m a Stingray, The Christmas Fairy, Sorrowful Eyes, Wibbly Wobbly Jellyfish and Rainbow’s Got His Socks Off.
She added: “I’m keeping busy and am working on illustrating more of my poems into miniature books. I hope to be able to put them in charity shops, when they reopen, so they can raise some funds for themselves as well.”
