No batteries required for day of traditional games

OLD FASHIONED FUN: Young Ella Wallace and Evie Russ-Griffiths try their hand at tiddlywinks for the first time

VISITORS to Barnard Castle will be transported back to a time before computer games at a special fundraising event later this month.

No Batteries Required will challenge today’s Xbox-savvy generation to take on those of an older vintage at traditional board games including snakes & ladders, tiddlywinks, ludo, draughts, Battleship, blow football, dominoes, noughts and crosses, chucks and dots and dashes.

In addition, outdoor activities of yesteryear, such as skittle, hopscotch and skipping, are also planned if the weather permits.

The event is being organised by members of the Barnard Castle Dementia Friendly Community Group on Saturday, May 25, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, at The Witham, as part of Dementia Action Week.

Organiser Susan Kirkbride said she was also looking for an old fashioned bagatelle for the event.

Prizes, including tickets for the family show Bird’s Nest Billy at The Witham, will be up for grabs.

Admission is £2 or £5 for families and there will be a raffle. Money raised will go to the Alzheimer’s Society.

“Come and challenge the children to play the games you enjoyed before computers,” said Mrs Kirkbride.

“And children – can you beat the oldies at their own games?

“Families – especially grandparents and grandchildren – might enjoy the fun, but anyone coming through the doors will be given the opportunity to participate.”

Sarah Gent, The Witham’s marketing officer, added: “This is a brilliant event and we are delighted to support the work the dementia friendly group is doing to promote activities and events in the town.

“It’s really important to show that we are involved in this kind of event and we can’t wait for it.”
