New craft project for over-55s will culminate with exhibition

GETTING CREATIVE: Trevor Dixon in his workshop where he produces miniature models. Mr Dixon will lead sessions of the new Creative Age project at Utass

THE search is on for a group of would-be crafters aged 55 or over for a new project to be launched in the autumn.

The project, Creative Age, is being organised by officials at The Witham, Barnard Castle, but hosted by Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services (Utass) at Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Between 15 and 20 people aged 55-plus are being sought for the activity, which will be run by artist and former farmer Trevor Dixon.

Mr Dixon produces detailed, miniature models of farmhouses, outbuildings and drystone walls using natural materials.

These models reflect the landscape he has worked in since adolescence.

The project aims to bring together people who share a common background, such as working in rural Teesdale.

Sarah Gent, marketing officer at The Witham said: “While learning a new skill, or developing an existing one, it is hoped that the group will also use the session as an opportunity to socialise and share past experiences.

“The emphasis is very much on having an enjoyable afternoon in the company of like-minded people.

“No previous modelling experience is required, just enthusiasm.”

At the end of the project the work created will be displayed, alongside Trevor’s work, in the gallery at The Witham during March 2020.

Weekly sessions will take place on Thursdays, from 2pm to 4pm beginning October 3 and concluding on February 27 next year.

There is no charge thanks to a County Durham Community Foundation grant. Refreshments will be provided.

To sign up or for more information, email: info@the witham.org.uk putting Creative Age Project in the subject line.
