Musical takes pupils back to colourful ’80s

LIVELY AFFAIR: Singing and dancing were key to students' production of Fame Jnr last week at Teesdale School

BRIGHTLY coloured ankle warmers, lycra leotards and a whole lot of singing and dancing was going on at Teesdale School, in Barnard Castle, last week when students performed their end of term production of the classic musical Fame Jnr.

Based on the popular 1980s television series the musical follows the lives of aspiring actors, dancers and musicians as they start their first term at the School for Performing Arts (PA) and features a wide range of songs and dance routines.

Audiences made up of friends and family packed into the school hall to witness the spectacle, which was performed over three nights.

The production was directed by Presia Nicholls, ably assisted by sixth form student Cal Baker, making his directorial debut.

Despite spending hours helping guide his fellow students, the 16-year-old didn’t get to see any of the evening performances due to a clash of performing dates.

While his school mates entertained audiences indoors, Cal headed to The Bowes Museum where he was performing in the Castle Players summer production of Alice in Wonderland.

However, he did managed to watch the final dress rehearsal at Teesdale School on Wednesday afternoon when students performed to pupils from one of the North East Leaning Trust’s partner schools.
