Mischief and mayhem on the Green

The Three Inch Fools

TOURING theatre company The Three Inch Fools are bringing two new family-friendly productions to the region.

After ten years of performing Shakespeare’s plays they have diversified and started to write their own. Following the success of last year’s hilariously funny Robin Hood, this year they are performing their version on The Gunpowder Plot. You can see them on The Green in Whorlton, on Tuesday, June 21 at 7pm.

And for those who enjoy classic Shakespearean mischief and hilarity, the company are performing Twelfth Night on June 9 at 7.30pm at Middleton Lodge Estate, near Middleton Tyas.

Three Inch Fools co-Founder James Hyde said: “After an uncertain two years, we’re all excited to get back on the road and bring our unique productions of Twelfth Night and The Gunpowder Plot to audiences across the country.

“Though we have now toured over a dozen Shakespeare plays, we took the risk during the pandemic of launching our first commissioned work, Robin Hood, and were delighted to connect with new audiences – many of whom have since come back to see our Shakespeare work.

“In keeping with our love for British history, this year we decided to take a new look at another old tale with The Gunpowder Plot, and we look forward to surprising our audiences with our retelling of a story they think they know.”

The Fools’ UK summer tour includes more than 80 historic and notable locations, after which, the company will take their shows into schools.

Much like a touring troupe in Shakespearean times, the Fools take to the road bringing lively and irreverent productions to villages and towns with little more than their costumes, props and instruments.

The annual tour has become a mainstay of many places up and down the country, with tens of thousands turning out to their productions each year.

In Twelfth Night, the actors present a rip-roaring comedy that audiences of all ages will enjoy. Expect an evening of mischief and hilarity, fast-paced drama, and much music-making along the way.

Meanwhile, in The Gunpowder Plot, an infamous moment in British history comes to life in a calamitous production fit for all the family. Expect uproarious intrigue, endless costume changes, and many, many false moustaches in this highly flammable historical tale.

A cast of five will, between them, play more than 50 characters and 20 instruments, and visit over 80 venues across the UK between May and September.
