Meet mosaic maestro Cheryl at Designer Makers Market

MARVELLOUS MOSAICS: Cheryl Brook at her studio at home in Bowes

UNIQUE mosaic artworks are among the many treasures people can look forward to at the next Designer Makers Market at The Witham, in Barnard Castle.

The regular event, organised by textile artist Kathryn Guy, takes place on Saturday, November 17, and Sunday, November 18 between 10am and 4pm.

The market showcases some of the best artisans from the region and is an opportunity to see some of them as they the work.

People can look forward to meeting mosaic artist Cheryl Brook at the next event.

Using a variety of materials, including stained glass, beads, ceramics, jewellery and polymer clay, the artist enjoys creating items to hang in children’s rooms. Among the crafts are teddy bears, caterpillars, trains, hedgehogs and dinosaurs.

Mrs Brook, who works from her studio in Bowes, said: “Throughout my life I’ve done all kinds of art and craft work as hobbies, but started mosaic four years ago when my husband had a stroke and I became his carer.

“Being at home, I needed a hobby. Up to this year, it was still a hobby but a friend of mine, also a mosaic artist, encouraged me to go further so I applied to exhibit at Art in the Pen, in Thirsk and Skipton this year. To my utter surprise was accepted for both.

“The experience was fantastic – all the other artists were so supportive and helpful Making Mosaics has given me an outlet for my creative ideas and everyone seems to like them.”

Event organiser Kathryn Guy said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to buy or commission gifts for Christmas.”

Admission to the Designer Makers Market is free but a donation to St Teresa’s Hospice will be welcomed.
