Laughing all the way to Edinburgh

LAUGHTER ALL THE WAY: Gyles Brandreth

VETERAN entertainer Gyles Brandreth makes his third visit to Barnard Castle as part of the Funny Way To Be Comedy Club’s annual series of Edinburgh Fringe Festival preview shows.

The popular TV and radio personality will perform his new show Break a Leg at The Witham on Saturday, July 28.

The show is the culmination of a laughter-packed month which features two other preview days at The Witham on July 14 and 21.

Each preview day will see four full one-hour shows from comics ahead of their Edinburgh Festival runs.

Tickets are available for individual shows or there is an option to buy a day ticket offering admission to all four performances.

The line-up for Saturday, July 14, kicks off with Nish Kumar, host of Radio 4’s Newsjack and BBC2’s Mash Report at 5pm.

He is followed on stage at 6.30pm by Alex Edelman, New York-based winner of the 2014 Edinburgh Comedy Award for best newcomer.

Then at 8pm, it’s the turn of 2017 best newcomer nominee Lucy Pearman, with Steve Bugeja on stage at 9.30pm.

On Saturday, July 21, another 2017 best newcomer nominee, Lauren Pattison, is first on stage at 5pm, with Adam Hess following at 6.30pm.

Sony Award and Time Out Award winner Tom Wrigglesworth is up at 8pm and the evening concludes with Ed Night at 9.30pm.

On July 28, Gyles Brandreth will present a full evening of entertainment.

His new show promises to be a celebration of all things theatrical.

His previous visits to Barnard Castle have sold out and his affinity to The Witham led him to pen the introduction to the venue’s summer programme brochure.

Peter Dixon, of Funny Way To Be Comedy Club, said: “It has become a bit of a tradition for us to produce an Edinburgh preview day in July with four acts performing on one evening.

“This year we have gone a stage further by producing two days of shows in this format.”

He added: “For every show we have hand-picked the performers to showcase a variety of comedy styles. They are award winners, headliners and top touring comedians.

“We are particularly excited to have booked four of the seven best newcomers nominated at last year’s Edinburgh Festival,” he said.

“It is a real thrill to have them perform in Barnard Castle.”

Tickets to individual shows on the preview days are £6 or £7. Day tickets are £20.

Tickets for Gyles Brandreth are £20.

All tickets are available online from funnywaytobe.com as well as The Witham box office on 01833 631107.
