THE ancient craft of Japanese paper folding will be explored in a workshop at Mickleton Village Hall led by two of the UK’s most talented paper designers and artists.
Cabinet of Curiosity – which comprises costume and theatre designer Caroline Collinge and architect Edmond Salter – will bring their unique and highly skilled artistry to the venue on Saturday, May 22, with a Paper Origami Lampshade workshop.
The event opens Highlights Rural Touring’s Creative Highlights programme.
The half-day workshop will take participants step by step through the Japanese craft, as they discover how to fold paper and follow origami crease patterns, including the traditional waterbomb technique, to create a beautiful origami lampshade to take home.
Kate Lynch, director at Highlights, said she was delighted that creative experiences such as the workshop can once again return to rural venues.
“I’m so thrilled that we can bring some of our region’s most talented artists and makers into community venues for some truly participatory workshops. Creative Highlights is a new strand of work for us, building on the success of our previous craft tours.”
She added: “We hope that these workshops will provide a chance to learn a new skill, to get together with friends, meet new people and enjoy a relaxed and creative day.”
Ms Collinge and Mr Salter run specialist paper and origami workshops for schools and museums as well as many high profile organisations, including the V&A Museum of Childhood, the National Trust and the British Council.
Ms Collinge was in Teesdale last year as one of the artists in residence for #Untitled10 at The Bowes Museum, when she focussed on the architecture and history of the museum to craft miniature paper scenes as part of her commission.
The Mickleton workshop is suitable for all levels, from those who’ve never tried origami to advanced paper crafters who might want to learn a new technique.
All equipment, tools and resources are provided with tailor-made kits for each participant to take into account Covid-19 restrictions.

Given the current situation regarding Covid-19, there may be last minute cancellations due to restrictions, so participants are asked to check the venue or Highlights website before travelling. If the workshop is cancelled due to Covid-19 participants will be provided with a full refund.
