Cricket Club to host murder mystery evening

WHODUNNIT? Super sleuth Evie Brenkley with the victim

DASTARDLY deeds will be unfolding at Barnard Castle Cricket Club involving the demise of a school headmaster – but it’s all in a good cause.

On November 24 a murder-mystery evening is taking place to help raise funds for the Tees Valley Youth Orchestra tour to Carnegie Hall, New York, next summer. Who Killed The Headmaster is an interactive play which is a performed reading by a handful of enthusiastic amateurs.

The event is being organised by Dorothy Brenkley and the “victim” will played by cricket club president Stephen Brenkley.

In the role of the detective is daughter Evie, who is also a member of the orchestra.

Mrs Brenkley said: “Our family love whodunnits and so this seemed a great, fun way to help raise some much-needed funds for the young musicians.

“I have been lucky to get the support from some friends who are game for a laugh and together we hope to entertain and challenge the audience to solve the murder-mystery. There is a prize for whoever comes closest to solving it.”

She added: “The play is written by Chris Martin and some of his plays have in the past been put on by the Cotherstone Players, so we know it will have the right amount of intrigue and clues.”

There will be a raffle on the night and the star prize is a Blagraves voucher for £50.

“I want to thank Ken and Liz, from Blagraves, and also other businesses in Barnard Castle who have generously donated raffle prizes, including the Co-Op, Boyes, BohoBoo, Clarendons, Chocolate Fayre, Maxwells, Morrisons and Saks,” said Mrs Brenkley

The Tees Valley Youth Orchestra next year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

It is made up of more than 100 young people from all parts of the North-East. Their conductor is Nicholas Nowicki. The Friends of Tees Valley Youth Orchestra is a registered charity and consists of a group of parents and supporters of the orchestra who raise money to help students in various ways, including attending tours, hiring musical scores, and purchasing and maintaining specialised instruments.

There are limited tickets available for the murder-mystery and they cost £10 including a sausage and chips supper.
