Comedy legends Cannon and Ball bring new play to Hippodrome stage

BACKSTAGE LIFE: Cannon and Ball are bringing their new play The Dressing Room to the Darlington Hippodrome

COMEDY duo Cannon and Ball are coming to town.

But rather than running through their more familiar routines, they will be performing a brand new play – The Dressing Room.

Written by Bobby Ball, the Dressing Room is described as part play and part variety show.

It also features fellow comedians Stu Francis and Johnnie Casson and is set in a theatre.

The plot promises to give an insight into backstage gossip and what the acts really think of the audience.

It also offers a glimpse into other aspects of the backstage theatre world that an audience would not usually get to see as each performer prepares to take to the stage.

Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball are now the longest running comedy double act in the country.

The duo first met in the early 1960s when they were both working as welders in Lancashire and started out as singers working the pubs and clubs of Lancashire.

On May 18, 1974, Cannon and Ball first appeared on an episode of the variety show, The Wheeltappers And Shunters Club.

Set in a workingmen’s club, their act stood out and it was their first step to the big time.

They were first offered their own TV show in 1979, with their popularity peaking during the 1980s.

Now 44 years on from their TV breakthrough they continue to perform as a duo in theatre and panto, as well as making numerous cameo appearances on TV.

The Dressing Room is at Darlington Hippodrome for just one night – Tuesday, September 11.
