ACCLAIMED: Nordic Fiddlers Bloc will perform at The Witham on Saturday

AN evening of fiddle music performed by an internationally-acclaimed trio is on the cards in Barnard Castle.

Comprising Olav Luksengård Mjelva, from Norway, Swede Anders Hall and Kevin Henderson, from Shetland, each is regarded as a leading exponent of their respective traditions.

As a result, they have found themselves in great demand throughout the world performing together.

With a firm focus on the rich traditional fiddle music from where they come from, they have developed a sound that has been described as unique, meaningful, intense and invigorating.

The group’s visit to The Witham kicks off the centre’s spring season of traditional and contemporary folk and roots music.

Future gigs at the venue include Tannahill Weavers (April 10), Winter Wilson (April 19), Melrose Quartet (April 28), Daoiri Farrell (May 10) and Heidi Talbot and John McCusker (June 9).

Katy Taylor, director of The Witham, said: “To have these three fiddle players here offers people the chance to experience some of the very best traditional fiddle playing around.”

Tickets are £12 in advance and £14 on the door.
