This autumn, Bowes Village Hall is delighted to welcome FreePlay all the way from Toronto, in Canada, with their unique vocal performance.
The duo are at the village hall on Monday, October 16 at 7.30pm.
This is the first time since the Covid pandemic that Highlights Rural Touring Scheme has been in a position to bring Canadian artists over the ocean to perform in rural venues. And Bowes Village Hall is fortunate to have been chosen to present this fabulous duo to its Teesdale audience.
Using nothing but their voices and innovative live-looping techniques, genre-bending FreePlay takes you from the concert halls of Europe, to the jazz clubs of Manhattan, to the temples of India, and back to their native Toronto, Canada… all without leaving your seat.
From Bach to The Beatles and Bollywood, Dylan Bell and Suba Sankaran effortlessly cross musical boundaries, continually combining and recombining sounds to create a concert of endless variety with the intimate delivery of two people.
Suba’s musical career began at an early age, studying South Indian classical singing and percussion with her father, master drummer Trichy Sankaran. She graduated from York University (Toronto) in 1997, where she studied jazz, early music, world music and contemporary improvisation.
Dylan also went to York University, in Canada, where he studied piano, bass, percussion and conducting. Ever since he discovered his parents’ eclectic record collection, featuring Beethoven to Bob Dylan, Dylan’s musical curiosity has kept him effortlessly crossing and blurring musical boundaries
Award-winning Dylan and Suba are international leaders in the a cappella world. They have performed in more than 20 countries across six continents and are co-artistic directors of SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival.
Having previously performed for Highlights in 2019, where audience members were left wowed by their style, director, Kate Lynch was delighted to have welcomed them back. She said: “We are committed to re-establishing our connection with the best of Canadian artists after a challenging few years, and are delighted that Dylan and Suba have been so keen to return to Highlights venues.
“The audience in Bowes & Gilmonby Village Hall are in for a truly wonderful show.”
