CRAFT SKILLS: Artist Rachel Scott says she stumbled across stippling almost by accident

FOR Teesdale artist Rachel Scott, the coronavirus lockdown couldn’t have come at a more inconvenient time.
This weekend, Ms Scott should have been taking part in her first trade exhibition, the British Craft Trade Fair, in Harrogate – the largest event of its kind, focusing exclusively on British made artisan products.
She produces pieces of stippling (the art of dots), which she “stumbled across by accident” while making a birthday card for a friend.
“I found the process incredibly relaxing and absorbing and it has all grown from there.
“As soon as the sun shines, I take my little camper van out, park up and get the pen and paper out.
“Over the past couple of years, I’ve been able to create illustrations of things I love, mostly nature related and living in Teesdale.”
Ms Scott has enjoyed a varied career, working in tourism and even includes a stint of a sheep farm in the Falkland Islands.
More recently she has become well known in the area for her skills as a picture framer and after taking a big leap last year, set up a studio with friend and fellow artist Holly Scott.
At present Ms Scott sells her work through her website and via an independent retailer in Barnard Castle.
