A METAL detecting club which uncovered a bronze age hoard in Eggleston last year has given cash to Teesdale Day Clubs in thanks to farmers from the area who allow them to scour their fields.
West Lancashire Metal Detecting Club decided to donate £250 after being told of the lunch club charity’s work when talking to a farmer who had previous allowed them to search on his land.
Club secretary Graham Morrison said: “She helps out with the Teesdale Day Clubs helping vulnerable people and pensioners. She was telling me about how some of their members were really struggling due to the current situation due to being isolated, some in remote areas, etc.
“Our club committee decided to make a donation of £250 to the Teesdale Day Clubs. This money will help with expenses and phone calls etc, so that the volunteers can call and check in with some of their vulnerable members because many were not talking to anybody for days.
“Our club has always had the view that we will try to help and support organisations or worthy causes in the areas where we metal detect.”
Other charities to benefit is the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Fund and a homeless charity in Liverpool.
The hoard discovered by the club at Eggleston last summer is believed to have dated back about 3,000 years and included spears, knives and beads.
A sliver of gold was also unearthed.
The club is now looking for more places in Teesdale where they can search for finds. Mr Morrison said: “We are currently looking for farmers and landowners to gain permissions in the area of Teesdale so that we can raise some much-needed funds for organisations like Teesdale Day Clubs so we’ll be putting something back into the local community.
“Obviously, any event would only go ahead once the current situation has passed.”
