PART of Barnard Castle has become “a real community hub” since the coronavirus lockdown restrictions were introduced.
More people are turning to the Andalucia, Galgate News and Day Lewis Pharmacy, in Galgate, for their supplies rather than head into the town centre.
Although she had introduced a deli to Andalucia last November, Christine Taylour, who runs the shop, has expanded to offer a full range of dairy products and other essentials, ready made meals, pies and cakes to keep up with demand.
While shoppers are welcome one at a time inside the premises, Ms Taylour urges residents to ring in their orders which can be collected or delivered.
“I have got a lot of support from residents and we are really pleased to be helping to feed the older generation,” she said.
“I only started the deli last November, but this [lockdown] has changed the whole picture. We have been listening to what people say and getting more products in.
“With the chemist and newsagent, it’s become a real community hub, which I think is really.”
She added: “It’s like shopping has gone back in time and I hope it continues and people shop local.”
