Villagers flock to fun day as sun shines

CRASHING OUT: One team takes a tumble in the three legged race

THE sun shone and locals flocked to Gainford village green to take part in the annual fun day.

Opening the event, compare, Tony Kennan said: “At last the sun is shining, we have got a fun packed afternoon planned and so let’s have a great time.”

There were plenty of entrants for the fancy dress parade, which this year had the theme of Space.

The overall winners of the fancy dress, Bethany and Harrison Maughan are the first names to be engraved on the new Geoff Eastwood Trophy.

One of the judges, Lisa Johnson, said: “It has been an absolutely fantastic turn out and it was really difficult to choose a winner.”

This year the parish council sponsored the climbing wall and also a new event, a target run on the green.

This involved participants taking part in a number of races before shooting at electronic targets with an infrared pistol.

The racing on and around the green was as popular as ever with some events running heats due to the number of entrants.

Between the organised activities the crowds were entertained by music from Barnard Castle Band and the Scherzo Gainford Community Choir.

The riverside race was also well supported with more than 40 entries.

The 1.2km race, open to all ages, was a circuit from the village green, along the riverside and back via the churchyard.

The day ended with the ever-popular egg throwing competition.
