Players help Barney WI celebrate birthday

FULL OF FUN: Members of the Castle Players perform scenes from Alice in Wonderland for members of Barnard Castle WI and their guests

Barnard Castle WI

ON Monday, May 20, Barnard Castle WI celebrated their 5th birthday.

President Naila Laundy welcomed 16 members, ten WI guests and ten members from the Castle Players.

Members were reminded about the group meeting which was being held the next evening at Boldron village Hall.

A lovely buffet which the members had put on was enjoyed by everyone and gave the opportunity for guests to get to know one another and find out more about the Castle Players’ production – Alice in Wonderland – which they are putting on in the grounds of The Bowes Museum from July 10 to 13.

Sheila Jones then welcomed Dawn Trevor from Castle Players who gave a short introduction to the evening’s entertainment.

This was the first time anyone outside of the cast had seen these sneak previews so we felt quite privileged.

The first scene from Alice in Wonderland was from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and it was extremely funny and totally mad. Poor Alice was being asked the most ridiculous questions that had no sensible answer to them.

And the dormouse seemed to sleep through most of it until he was prodded awake to answer a question.

The second scene included singing and dancing from the Mock Turtle. He told Alice all about his education and then put on a very fine dance called the Lobster Quadrille.

Finally the turtle sang a song to Alice all about beau-ootiful Turtle soo-oop (beautiful turtle soup to you and me).

The actors were absolutely line perfect and threw themselves into their characters with gusto.

It was a really great evening which everyone enjoyed.

Thanks go to all the cast who gave of their time to come and put on a show just for us.

Tea and birthday cake was then served to everyone and the raffle drawn. Naila thanked everyone for coming.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, June 24, at 7pm in the Guide Hut when Viv Howe will come and help us all decorate a small box to take home. Visitors are most welcome. For more information contact Sheila Jones on 01325 733228.
