BARNARD Castle RUFC marked a first for the club with the first ever ladies’ fixture.

The side took on Hartlepool Rovers II team. The game was played in great spirit with both side showing no nerves.

Barney enjoyed great spells of attacking rugby and stout defence. Castle got on the score sheet first through Katie Boddy.

As the game went on Rovers’ experience started to show through and they edged the game 17-5.

Coach Paul Davis said: “All of the ladies loved playing the game, with some of them having only just started training a few weeks ago.”

A return fixture at Barnard Castle has been arranged for April 14.

Mr Davis added: “The club’s girls’ and ladies’ teams were launched two-and-a-half years ago and it is great that with support from the men and junior academy that they have come so far in such a short time.”

Both the girls and ladies teams are looking for new members, experienced or not.

Earlier this year, nine players from the girls’ U15 and U18 teams were called up to the county squads.

Anyone interested in joining the girls and ladies’ teams can contact Sarah Sowerby on 07770 211912.
